Middle Back Pain
Middle back pain is pain or discomfort in the area between your upper and lower back (also known as the thoracic spine). Middle back pain can be mild or severe, short-lived, or longer-lasting. You may feel it all the time or on and off.
Symptoms
The nature of middle back pain varies. Symptoms can come on suddenly, or gradually over time. Signs and symptoms of middle back pain include:
-
Pain that is sharp, stabbing, dull, achy, or cramping
-
Tight or stiff muscles
Causes
There are any number of reasons your middle back can hurt :
-
Incorrect posture while sitting or standing is a leading cause of middle back pain. Slouching increases pressure on the spine and leads to strained muscles as they try to maintain balance. When you sit, try to keep your shoulders back. When you stand, try to keep your back as straight as possible and your weight evenly placed on your feet.
-
Strain or injury to the muscles and ligaments that support your spine is sometimes the problem. This can come from overuse.
